An audio and visual archive experienced through a curated immersive tour of Radio Pakistan
Site:Muslim Gymkhana Pavilion, Karachi

This adaptive reuse project transforms the old Muslim gymkhana into a qawwali center, preserving its original structure while giving it a new function. Inspired by Amir Khusrau’s “Chaap Tilak”, the design process involved translating lyrical themes into sketches. The sketches born from poetry became the language of the space. The result is an architectural intervention that bridges the site’s historical identity with a contemporary cultural experience, not only retaining to an old meaningful building but also attempting to preserve the authentic form of Sufi devotional music – Qawwali.
The project creates a balance between preservation and transformation. While maintaining the building’s original structure and heritage value, it introduces new functions through spaces designed for both experience and education. This intervention reactivates an abandoned structure and fosters relationships with nearby music schools, creating a vibrant cultural hub rooted in tradition.
